We get it! Nobody wants to replace their sleeve or pad before they have to, and we’re certainly not here to tell you to replace perfectly good equipment!

At Goldline, we want you to get the most out of your gear, extend its lifespan, and curl your best. But where’s the fine line between getting your money’s worth and pushing your equipment a little too far?

How Often Should You Replace It?

On average, curling sleeves and pads last approximately 25 games. Of course, that number can vary depending on your position, how much you sweep, the cleanliness of your ice, and how you care for your equipment.

Here’s an easy rule of thumb for a typical curling season:

  • Curl once per week? Plan to replace your sleeve or pad about once per season.
  • Curl twice per week? Expect to replace it about twice per season.

These are guidelines, not expiration dates! If you’re a heavy sweeper, play additional bonspiels, or regularly encounter dirty ice, you may need to replace yours sooner.

Getting Your Money’s Worth… or Pushing Your Luck?

Take a good look at your sleeve or pad. Does any of this sound familiar?

  • It’s visibly dirty or discoloured.
  • The surface is starting to peel or show signs of damage.
  • It’s feeling rough or uneven.
  • Your sweeping doesn’t seem quite as effective as it used to.
  • Every end, someone’s rock is picking, and you’re starting to wonder if your broom might be the culprit. 🫣

A little discolouration doesn’t automatically mean it’s time for a replacement. But when dirt builds up, the surface starts breaking down, or your equipment isn’t performing as it should, you may have crossed that line!

Can You Wash Your Sleeve or Pad?

Good news! The surface that contacts the ice is made from a waterproof PVC material, so you can gently wipe away surface dirt with a damp cloth.

One thing you should NEVER do? Scrub your sleeve or pad with the bristle brush at the end of the ice!

We know it’s tempting, but those abrasive bristles can damage the surface and cause peeling, shortening the life of your equipment.

And remember, while gentle cleaning can help maintain your sleeve or pad, it can’t reverse wear. Once the surface starts breaking down, it’s time for a replacement.

A Little Care Goes a Long Way!

Want to get as many games as possible out of your sleeve or pad? A few simple habits can help:

  • Store it properly. Avoid leaving your broom head pressed against rough surfaces or buried under other equipment.
  • Keep it dry. Wipe away moisture after your game and allow it to dry before storing.
  • Clean it gently. A damp cloth is your friend. Abrasive brushes are not!
  • Check it regularly. Keep an eye out for peeling, damage, and excessive dirt buildup.

A little attention between games can go a long way toward keeping your equipment in good condition.

Invest in Your Game, Not Unnecessary Replacements!

Good curling equipment is an investment, and we want you to get every game you can out of it.

But there’s a difference between getting the most out of your gear and letting worn-out equipment hold you back.

A well-maintained sleeve or pad can help you get the most out of your sweeping while reducing the risk of introducing unwanted debris onto the ice.

So don’t replace it before you need to, but don’t hang onto it long after it’s stopped doing its job, either!

🥌 Give your broom a quick gear check before your next draw. Your sweeping partners (and your ice maker!) will thank you.
