Today, we are very excited to officially launch three special Goldline Curling broom designs.
The #UnitedWeCurl broom series is a passion project for us.
As the cornerstone piece of the #UnitedWeCurl initiative, Goldline Curling partnered with Andrew Paris, Deb Martin and Greyden Yee Louison to design a special series of curling brooms to promote diversity in curling.
All three designs are available now for purchase at goldlinecurling.com.
#UnitedWeCurl is an initiative developed by Goldline Curling in continuation of our ongoing commitment to fight systemic racism and promote inclusion in our sport.
This follows directly from the statement we released in the summer of 2020 outlining our solidarity with Black Lives Matter, and our pledge to open up curling for racialized persons and people who identify as belonging to communities pushed to the margins in our society. We are committed to addressing inequalities in curling, especially for those who do not feel safe in curling clubs.
By opening up those spaces, we can truly meet curling’s vision of being a fully inclusive and diverse sport.
The goal of this program is threefold.
The first is directed toward the existing curling community. The designs illustrate a deep connection with racialized communities. By doing so, they promote discussion around the barriers often faced by marginalized groups that keep them from participating in our sport.
It’s important for us all to realize that these barriers do exist even though the sport fashions itself as welcoming and open to everyone. This is not a point for debate, as the lived experiences of racialized persons indicate this to be true, and we must therefore better understand the reasons why it remains challenging and even unsafe for them.
The second goal is to fashion a bridge to connect to the represented communities and explicitly state: we see you, we want you here, and we will commit to transforming our spaces to ensure racialized persons are welcome, valued, respected, and truly belong.
The final goal is to raise funds, which will be going to our design partners and initiatives that they are working on specifically created to address the first two goals.
In a special zoom video, recorded for us by Dr. Richard Norman, each designer discusses their motivation for participating in this project, the important and powerful symbology included in their designs, their initial reactions to seeing the completed pieces, and their hopes for the future of curling.
